What Is Endoscopy Technology?

Endoscopy Technology: Colonoscopy

Endoscopy technology is an important method for detecting and diagnosing early-stage colorectal cancer. In the past 30 years, with the widespread use and improvement of endoscopy technology and the development of various endoscopic instruments, the detection and diagnosis of early colorectal cancer have become possible.

  • Magnifying endoscopy (also known as enlarging endoscopy): can amplify mucosal images more than 100 times and repeat colonic cancer pit opening changes.

  • Staining endoscopy: commonly uses brilliant scarlet and methylene blue as chromogenic agents (generally sprayed with 1% methylene blue solution). Inflammatory lesions, small polyps, and polypoid changes can be diagnosed based on the distribution of the pigments. The combination of magnifying endoscopy and staining endoscopy can observe early-stage colorectal cancer mucosal glandular duct openings in groove or irregular shapes, which is helpful for early diagnosis.

  • Endoscopic ultrasonography: tumors' location, range, and depth can be determined through endoscopic ultrasonography. Generally, it is believed that the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasonography for determining the depth of tumors is over 80%, and it can also determine whether there is metastasis in lymph nodes and distant organs. This helps to improve the detection rate and preoperative diagnosis rate of early colorectal cancer, which is of great significance for improving the prognosis of colorectal cancer.

  • CT colonoscope: This is an imaging technique that uses CT to obtain data from colon angles, that is, two-dimensional and three-dimensional data.

In recent years, due to the clinical application of staining endoscopy and magnifying endoscopy, the use of EMR or EMPR for the complete removal of early-stage colorectal cancer, and the significant increase in the detection rate of early colorectal cancer, internal medicine treatment can lead to a cure, significantly improving the five-year survival rate of colorectal cancer.
